...where Jesus is Lord and His children grow in Grace, Truth, and Knowledge.

St. James Lutheran School opened August 15, 2005, with classes for three, four, and five-year-olds. In August 2009, SJLS is expanding its program to include Extended Care (after school and holiday care) and FIRST GRADE as we grow toward becoming a primary school. The school was founded as God's school and is operated by His principles. The staff, volunteers, and Board are God's dedicated and highly qualified servants whose goal is to help each child master and integrate the highest academic and moral standards.

Mrs. Susan Mitchum is Headmistress of St. James Lutheran School. To introduce myself to you, I would share that I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Winthrop University.  I retired from education two years ago, having worked 28 of my 34 years in Sumter District Two.  I have taught students in grade 2 through college freshmen, as well as graduate classes for teachers through Converse College.  Most of my years in District Two were in the Gifted and Talented Program, where I served the last 10 years as Coordinator of the Gifted and Talented Program. Over several years, my administrative position also included Fine Arts and Foreign Languages.   From about the time I was eight, I felt that education was my calling.   I love children and I love learning.  So perhaps, as the Lord guided me through the experiences of those past years, He did not intend for me to retire; instead, He was also preparing me to serve here at St. James.
