Pastor Paul Hirth
Interim Pastor

Office: 803.773.2260

Born in northeastern Pennsylvania, I lived the bulk of my life in the suburbs of Philadelphia (both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey sides of the Delaware River).  I played baseball, soccer, football and basketball from middle school through college, and I played several musical instruments from grade school on.  I graduated from Drexel University of Philadelphia.  I spent a while on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army before deciding that God was pointing me toward ordained ministry.  I graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1965 and I served 4 congregations in the southeast Pennsylvania Synod until 1983.  That year, Peggy and I married and moved to New Jersey to serve a congregation just east of Philadelphia.  I served there for 12 years and “retired” in 1995.  We then bought the very first home either of us had ever owned (me in parsonages and Peggy, before we met, always in apartments).  I spent most Sundays supplying in New Jersey congregations until we moved to Elloree, South Carolina in August of 2005.  We rented a house for 16 months while we built a home on 2 acres of lakefront on Lake Marion.  We moved into the house in January of last year.

I love to play golf and I’m an avid bass fisherman.  Actually, I love fishing in general as well and will catch anything that will bite (except mosquitoes and gnats).  I plan to actually put my boat into the water, if the water ever decides to get deep enough again to reach our boat dock.  Peggy retired in 2003 and loves working through her home-based business.  We love to travel (mostly around our great country), enjoy theater, movies, reading “motivational books” and sightseeing.

I’ve supplied in South Carolina since December of 2005.  I spent 5 months as stated supply at St. Johns in Beaufort and 7 months as interim at Our Shepherd in Hartsville, with a number of individual churches supplied in as well.  I’ve just “enjoyed the daylights” out of my time with you at St. James and I joyfully look forward to whatever time God gives us together.  Thanks immensely for the kindness of your reception.

"I have enjoyed working as the Administrative Assistant at St. James Lutheran Church since June of 2001.”

It takes a lot of great people to make a great church.
We are fortunate to have some very dedicated folks providing leadership at St. James.
